Globe-Wernicke Mahogany Barrister Bookcase
Product details
Seller's Notes:The Globe-Wernicke barrister bookcase is one of the great American antiques — and this three-section Grade 598 mahogany example comes with all the right credentials: original paper labels legible inside the sections, original glass panels, original brass lift-front hardware. Grade 598 is the premium solid mahogany designation in the Globe-Wernicke system — dark rich finish, oxidized brass hardware, solid mahogany throughout. Globe-Wernicke, formed in Cincinnati in 1899 when Henry Yeiser acquired Otto Wernicke's patented Elastic Bookcase system, produced the modular stackable bookcase that lawyers and professionals throughout America made a fixture of their offices and libraries. The "barrister bookcase" name has stuck for over a century — these pieces are forever associated with the serious, book-filled professional interior of the early 1900s, and they translate just as naturally into a home library, study, or living room today. Three-section configuration: rolled cornice top, two full D10¼ sections with lift-front glass doors, one shallower bottom section, stepped base. All original labels present throughout — increasingly rare and significant for provenance. A fully documented piece of American furniture history.
