Century Furniture Asian 3 Piece Bedroom Set
Product details
Seller's Notes:Available for pickup on Friday, May 6. From my father's estate. He was very proud of these pieces, which he purchased about two years ago. They are most likely from the 50's or 60's. He lovingly restored the lighting and made sure all the hardware was functioning. These were the gems of his furniture collection. This bed in particular was a favorite design of the man who designed it and a bed just like this was presented to him by Century Furniture Co. upon his retirement. I wish I could keep the collection myself, but I live in California so it's impractical for me. I want to find someone who will love and appreciate these fine pieces. I will post more pictures soon. Dimensions: Illuminated Alcove queen sized bed (headboard and bed frame) - width 67.5" x length 88" x height 83" Nightstand - width 25" x depth 18.5" x height 25.5 " Armoire cabinet (with double hinged doors) - width 40" x depth 19" x height 81" From the "Sobota Collection" this Asian influenced set includes the illuminated alcove queen sized bed, Tall armoire cabinet, and one nightstand. Made of solid oak, the nightstand features dovetailed drawer and cabinet below. Brass handles on nightstand and armoire cabinet are cast in a Chinoiserie style. The top of the nightstand has fine carved lines around the edges and the ming shaped bracket feet are carved with curved scrolling details. The illuminated alcove bed was restored to working condition and features 4 lights that can be controlled - 2 lights at a time can be turned on by a push button on the each side of the bed, so each side can have their lights on or off as desired. The matching queen sized bed frame has gently curved feet. The tall armoire cabinet features one large drawer on bottom with curved brass handles, the middle section has two doors that open to two long drawers, two short drawers (with brass pulls) and three cubbies. The top section has two doors that open to shelves. Design note: The doors are double hinged so that 1) you can open the doors part way and get what you want and 2) you can open them fully and swing them out and they wrap around the side of the cabinet so the doors aren't a nuisance and take up room when you open them. Brilliant! I will add more pictures soon to highlight this feature and all the accents. Beautifully finished to a warm maple wood color. All pieces are made of solid oak, with exceptional construction and design. History - Made by Century Furniture - Century Furniture is one of the world's largest privately owned manufacturers of upper-end residential furniture. Its broad line of wood and upholstered furniture consists of bedroom, dining and occasional collections in traditional, transitional and contemporary styling. Century is recognized in the industry as a design leader, ranked in the forefront for its expertise in finishing and the many details of fine craftsmanship. Century has an extensive casegoods facility with state-of-the-art woodworking capabilities and a sophisticated finishing operation, as well as three upholstery factories – all located in Hickory, North Carolina. With more than 60 years of stable growth, an experienced and aggressive management team and considerable investment in new technology, Century is meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Harley Ferguson Shuford, Sr. established Century Furniture Company in 1947 as a selling agent for local upholstery lines. A year later, he built a casegoods plant in Hickory, North Carolina and manufactured an 18th century style mahogany dining suite that shipped the following January. Today Century’s Wood Products Division offers a variety of styles comprised of more than 700 different items. The company is known for managing the complexities of a broad product line while continually improving its quality and service. In 1952, Mr. Shuford hired Raymond K. Sobota to design for Century. Sobota's long-running Citation Collection became a major force in establishing the company's reputation as a style leader and was only one of many outstanding, successful collections; the partnership between Century and Sobota endured for more than 40 years. These pieces were designed by Longtime Century Furniture designer Raymond Sobota who passed away in March, 2010 at the age of 96. He created more than 150 wood collections for company. He designed Century Furniture's wood collections for 45 years Sobota got his start as a freelance designer for several furniture manufacturers after graduating from the Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Mich. In 1950, he became associated exclusively with Century and designed all of the company's wood collections - totaling more than 150 - until 1995. Among the highlights of his career with Century were the Citation, Chin Hua, Claridge, Henry Ford Museum and the British National Trust collections. Sobota is credited with helping Century transition from a promotional wood resource to the high-end design leader it is known as today. When he retired, Century presented him with a collection of his favorite pieces from previous years called the Sobota collection. Sobota won more than 18 design awards in his career, including the Most Prestigious Designer of the Year award given by his peers in 1989.
