Seller's Notes:This Futon has been beautifully preserved and little used. There are absolutely no defects or tears. The upholstery is like new. They all fit snugly next to one another. This Futon has sat in the finished basement with oak floors since the 70's. It is temperate here. Meaning, it is cooler than the rest of the house all year long so the wood and upholstery is well preserved. We are not desperate to sell. When it goes to someone who will love and care for it as we did, I can wait for that day. Until then, enjoy the photos and the description. "A vintage Stendig futon with cushions typically weighs between 100 and 150 pounds, depending on the specific model, frame, and cushion material. Weight Estimate: The overall weight for a solid wood or heavy metal framed vintage piece is often around 100 kg (roughly 220 lbs) for very sturdy, high-quality models, but more commonly falls in the 100-150 lb range when including the heavy, thick foam or cotton mattresses typical of that era. Structure: They often feature solid pine, teak, or metal frames. I was told that this one is Teak. Because of their weight and age, these items often require two people to move and are typically listed as "Local Pick Up Only". The Italian-made teak futon sofa imported by Stendig in the 1960s/1970s is commonly attributed to designer Robert Haussmann. Key details regarding this piece include: Designer/Manufacturer: Often attributed to Robert Haussmann for Stendig. Design Features: The sofa typically features a teak wood frame with a convertible mechanism, allowing the backrest to flatten into a bed. Alternative Identification: Some similar models from this period and importer are listed as designed by Guglielmo Veronesi for ISA Bergamo. It is important to note that while Charles Stendig was a major importer of Swiss and Italian design, many of these pieces were specifically marked "Stendig" on the label, even if designed by other notable designers. For vintage Italian teak Stendig futons with vinyl seats, the typical fill material is high-density foam, often layered with dacron or polyester batting for softness, providing firm support with a comfortable top layer, common in mid-century designs for durability and shape retention. Key Characteristics: High-Density Foam: The core offers firm support, crucial for a futon's dual-use functionality (sofa and bed). Polyester Batting (Dacron): A thin layer wrapped around the foam gives it that plush, slightly softer feel and helps maintain its smooth shape. Why This Combination: Durability: Foam holds up well over time, preventing sagging. Comfort: The batting adds a cozy surface to the firmer foam base. Authenticity: This construction is typical for high-quality Italian mid-century modern pieces like those by Stendig, known for excellent craftsmanship. While specific materials can vary slightly by production year, expect a robust foam core wrapped in polyester fiberfill for the cushioning."
