No box spring required. We bought the bed on Oct 21, 2013, and we paid $1,699.00 before taxes and shipping. We love the bed, but it is simply too big for out NYC studio. It has a small tear behind the headboard, but because it's behind the headboard it shouldn't be noticeable in most furniture arrangments. We have the original receipt from Room & Board if you want to see it.
