Rare Brown Leather Knoll Drop Arm Sofa
Product details
Seller's Notes:The Knoll Drop Arm Sofa, tracing its roots to the 17th century, boasts a regal heritage as it once graced the seats of monarchs. Originally conceived as a royal throne, this hand-dyed sofa from that era gained widespread popularity between 1860 and 1910, with the Chesterfield style taking precedence. Noteworthy is the innovative hinged mechanism, allowing the sofa's arms to gracefully lower, either flat or at a comfortable 45° angle. In the broader context of design history, Knoll emerged as a trailblazer, significantly shaping modern design in the United States. Established in 1938 by German immigrant Hans Knoll, the company attracted luminaries such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen. Together, they redefined the aesthetic landscape of American homes and offices. Notably, Florence Knoll, after Hans's untimely death in 1955, assumed leadership. Her influence went beyond just furniture design; she implemented a holistic approach to design, with a dedicated division planning office systems. This approach, coupled with Knoll's mid-century modern furnishings, played a key role in the sleek and efficient transformation of the American workplace. The timeless elegance of classic Knoll furnishings is exemplified by this hand-dyed sofa, featuring iconic pieces like the Barcelona chair by Mies and Lilly Reich, Saarinen's Tulip chair, Breuer's Wassily lounge chair, and Bertoia's Diamond chair. Each piece not only encapsulates a chapter in the rich history of modern design but also showcases subtle character marks, adding a touch of authenticity and charm to this enduring collection. A very luxurious piece indeed. It’s so big, so deep and cozy, and because of the high sides two people can face each other and have a private conversation, or simply watch a film. The seats are all duck and feather filled cushions. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of creasing and wear.
