Seller's Notes:Set of four authentic Jamaica bar stools, designed by Pepe Cortés and manufactured by Amat in Spain. Each stool is stamped on the underside of the seat: "JAMAICA STOOL / DESIGN BY PEPE CORTES / FOR AMAT / MADE IN SPAIN," along with the Amat maker's mark. Photos of the stamp included.
These are classic, fantastic modern stools. The Jamaica has been in continuous production since the early 1990s and is one of the best-known pieces of modern Spanish design — a sculpted, polished cast-aluminum saddle seat on a slender chromed steel frame with a full ring footrest. The seat swivels 360° and is genuinely comfortable, which is not something you can say about most metal stools.
Dimensions (each), per Amat's specs for the bar-height aluminum version:
Seat height: 30.3"
Overall height: 31.9"
Width: 18.9"
Depth: 20"
Five-leg chromed steel base with a full ring footrest
Light enough to lift and move with one hand
Standard bar height — designed for a 41"–43" bar counter. (Amat also made a 26" counter version and a low version on wheels; these are the tall bar-height ones.)
Condition: Good vintage condition, honestly described. The aluminum seats show fine scratching and swirl marks from normal use — visible in the close-up photos. The chrome footrest rings have spotting and some rust at the weld joints on all four, again photographed. Frames are solid and stable, swivels turn smoothly, no wobbles, no bends, no repairs. These are a well-used set of a design classic, not as new.
Purchased and used in a home kitchen. Selling as a set of four only.
This is a single (multiple stools are available, priced individually) Jamaica bar stool, originally designed by Pepe Cortés for AMAT-3 in 1993. These stools are a later Knoll & AMAT-3 production from the 2000s. For context, Knoll was the US distributor or seller for AMAT-3 designs. The design incorporates a polished cast-aluminum seat, and has chromed steel legs. The Jamaica design is an important piece in the history of Spanish Design. The seat is sculpted in an ergonomic form that offers more comfort than one would think. While these appear quite modern upon first glance, this design plays well in various design schemes. The design has been on the market for over 25 years and has become a modern classic.
The listed price includes one stool. Seven are available. Each stool measures 31.89 inches in height, 14 inches in width, and 13.25 in depth. The seat height is 30.32 inches. The stools are in excellent used condition with minor wear consistent with age. These are not the lower counter stools.
