Michael Cooper 1967 Rolling Stones Eleven Hands Print
Product details
Seller's Notes:Michael Cooper (1941-1973) was a British photographer who is best known for his photographs of leading rock musicians of the 1960’s and early 1970’s, most notably the many photos he took of the Rolling Stones in the mid 1960’s. His most famous work is the album cover photo for the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. He also took the cover photo for the Stones’ LP Their Satanic Majesties Request. This image is from those 1967 sessions. Considered the “court photographer” to the Stones, Cooper formed a very close personal friendship with Keith Richards. He was also friends with the Beatles, Eric Clapton, Marrianne Faithful, Terry Southern. Andy Warhol, Peter Blake, William Burroughs, David Hockney,Francis Bacon,Jean Genet and many others. He was considered to be the best photographer in London at the time and there is speculation that the film Blow-up was based on his life and not David Bailey’s. He was also the staff photographer for British Vogue. His photography books include Stones centered “Blinds and Shutters” and “The Early Stones” as well as “Michael Cooper:You are Here”. “Their Satanic Majesties Request - Eleven Hands” is one of if not his most famous Stones photo (used on the cover of “The Early Stones” and featured in “Rolling Stones 50x20”. It gets its name from the fact that there are eleven hands visible in the photo. Whose hand is #11? Ian Stewart? This print is in excellent/like new condition as is the frame. I bought the print myself in 1989. It comes from a pet free and smoke free home. 20”x24” silver gelatin print on Ilford Gallerie paper The frame measures 26”x33” There seems to be 2 versions of this photo. This is the original as used on Cooper’s book cover. The similar photo from Morrison Hotel Gallery is $2670.00
