Marcel Breuer Wassily Arm Chair
Product details
Seller's Notes:****REDUCED FROM $2200*** For your consideration is a rare pre-Knoll, pre 1960 vintage tubular steel and brown leather armchair originally designed by the Hungarian born artist Marcel Breuer (1902 - 1981). One way of identifying the date is by the color and the fact that hex screws were used in the manufacture. In my professional opinion in the antiques business, I would estimate this rare pre-'60's release to be valued at $5,000. Although Mr. Bruer had an extensive career as an architect both in Europe and US (having designed the Whitney Museum in NYC), he is equally known for his modernist furniture designs. This design is now referred to as the Wassily chair since it's re- release in 1960 by Knoll Italian furniture makers. They named it thus due to the mistaken belief that Breuer designed it specifically for the famed Hungarian artist, Wassily Kandinsky (also at the Bauhaus) Breuer made a second chair for Kandinsky when Kandinsky admired the first. This chair was originally called Clubsessel B3 and was designed and created by Breuer in 1926 while studying and subsequently teaching at the Bauhaus. Obviously, ahead if his time, he was the first designer to conceive of furniture made of bent tubular steel, which was inspired by the curve in the handlebars of a bycycle. This wonderful early chair offered here which was almost always unsigned and has stood the test of time is still overwhelmingly popular today. See the photo taken at the Bauhaus in 1926. It is in original condition and has very nice patination on the leather.
