Seller's Notes:These chairs were designed by George Nakashima in 1944 for Knoll and entered Knoll production in 1946. They are a great example of the American Craft Movement. Not only are these chairs beautiful, they are also very comfortable. We bought them new at Design Within Reach about 15 years ago and have loved having them in our home. This set of 6 chairs are in good condition. One chair has a few scratches and another one has some discoloration (we have included pictures of both) but other than that they look great, with only minor signs of gentle use.

Geroge Nakashima was an MIT-trained architect who described himself as a “Japanese Shaker” – an expression of his interest in creating unadorned, functional objects. He also believed in pursuing a revival of lost crafts and practices, like traditional Japanese joinery and the use of natural materials. Nakashima was able to maintain the sculptural lines and fine craftsmanship of his Straight-Backed Chair (1946) even at the mass production level. Manufactured by Knoll.
