An Austrian architect who co-founded the Weiner Werkstätte, Josef Hoffmann designed numerous restrained yet visually interesting dining chairs – including several for cafés. He was deeply interested in the Arts and Crafts movement, but also embraced the mass-production of the industrial age. Those dual influences are evident in the Hoffmann Chair (1925), designed in collaboration with Viennese modernist Josef Frank. With straight, unadorned lines and a handwoven caned seat and back, this chair is lightweight and extremely comfortable. Its bentwood frame, made of solid European beechwood sourced from FSC-certified forests, is produced at the same factory bentwood pioneer Michael Thonet founded in 1861. Finished with an environmentally friendly water-based stain and clear varnish. Made in the Czech Republic.
