Mid-Century America was a world constructed of metal -- cars, buildings, furniture, airplanes -- solid and unchanging, almost indestructible. The General Fireproofing Company (GF) was an intrinsic part of that time, a leader in the metal office furniture industry. Their furniture was metal, sturdy, impenetrable, heavy -- built to last -- built like tanks. In 1948, GF debuted the Mode-Maker line of executive desks. Created in the first collaborative project between a manufacturer and an industrial designer, these timeless masterpieces added to the long list of Raymond Loewy's innovations, including the Coca Cola dispensing machine, Greyhound Bus, Air Force One, and the first space capsule. A GF brochure states that this imposing but relatively compact desk will help you work efficiently, and that the drawers pull easier and wear longer.
