Prouvé is not the kind of name you hear when it comes to inspiration for a flat-pack sofa design. More like, "inoffensive box shape with tapered legs." But if anyone were to go there it would be Alex O'Dell and Kyle Hoff, founders of Detroit-based startup Floyd, who named the French architect amongst their inspirations for a new product launched today. Floyd's flat-pack bed, table, desk, side table, and detachable legs are something of an anomaly in the furniture world: inexpensive for being well-made, yes, but also design-forward and distinctive. You see a Floyd bed frame and know exactly what it is, where it came from. The Floyd Sofa, the newest offering, is no different—in that it is completely different from any flat-pack sofa we've ever seen. The cushions aren't boxy, they're rounded as if overstuffed. But the frame is minimal, just six exposed steel legs (see the Prouvé influence?) supporting a few birch slabs. The combination triggers every good feeling you could possibly have about a sofa: Comfy? No question. Good-looking? It's going to feel like the fanciest piece of furniture you own. Timeless? Absolutely... assuming it will actually be around longer than my IKEA things. "We wanted to make sure it would last for decades," the founders say. "Our hope is that your grandchildren will be sitting on it in 2080."
