The upper hanging shelf is fastened in place, the lower pedestal is not attached. The doors can slide back into the main section for use as a media cabinet. Good quality details: hardwood construction - cherry, I believe dovetail drawer boxes very heavy We bought it from Giorgi Brothers in Daly City about 15 years ago. There are few nicks from the vacuum cleaner down low, and a couple spots where the retracting doors were nicked by the sliding track, but generally it is in very good condition.
