Among the discernible collectors and people of discriminating taste, the name Maddox Tables represents the best of the best. The Maddox Table Company began operation in 1898. It ceased operation around 1985. It was founded by William Maddox, son of an English immigrant, who invented a variety of furniture making machines, which he sold to manufacturers throughout the United States. Mr. Maddox owed much of his success as a table manufacturer to his invention of a machine for polishing wooden tabletops. One of the first furniture manufacturers in the United States to trademark his products, in 1898, Mr. Maddox sent a showman named Cedarine Allen on a world-wide promotional tour to Great Britain, Spain, Egypt, Arabia, Ceylon, Malaya, China, and Japan. In 1919 the Maddox family sold its table making business to the Shearman Brothers Lounge Company. In 1978 the company was again sold to the Crawford Furniture Manufacturing Company. For more information see Paul A. Spengler titled The Furniture Industry, published by the Fenton History Center in Our Town Magazine, Vol. 1, Issue 7. *****Treasure Island Interiors***** Considering how old it is and being well traveled in its lifetime, the secretary is in very good condition. The quality and craftsmanship speak volumes. Some minor wear that adds to charm. Minor signs of considerate use consistent with normal, residential employment it has seen over the years. One of the top drawer pulls is missing; can be easily replaces or left as is, since it does not detract hugely from the beauty of functionality of the piece. The pictures are of the actual item you are purchasing, so please look at them closely to confirm its genuine, original condition and outstanding appearance, as they are part of the description. Comes from a clean, non-smoking, pet-free home. This fine secretary desk represents spectacular value for money, and we have no doubt it will serve and delight its new owner for many years to come.
