Antique Drop-Leaf Table, Spool Legs, Brass Casters
Product details
Seller's Notes:A charming and well-made American drop-leaf table in the Victorian spool-turned style, featuring four lathe-turned hardwood legs with a closely set ring-and-bobbin profile, original brass cup casters on all four feet, a planked hardwood top in cherry or American fruitwood, and a pine apron of traditional country cabinetmaking construction. The precise period of manufacture is difficult to pin down without additional provenance — spool-turned furniture was produced from the mid-19th century through various revival periods into the early 20th century — but the table is genuine, characterful, and full of decorative warmth. The four spool-turned legs are the piece's defining and most appealing feature: rhythmic, sculptural, and deeply characteristic of the American vernacular furniture tradition. The original brass cup casters are a remarkable survival, present and functional on all four legs. The warm hardwood top — amber-toned cherry or fruitwood planked in broad boards — and the pine apron below are consistent with American country production of the Victorian era and its revivals. Both leaves raise to create a generous dining surface with softly rounded corners; one or both can drop to make a slim console or sofa table. The table is structurally sound and ready for use. Condition shows honest age and character throughout. No maker's markings. A lovely piece for traditional, eclectic, or farmhouse interiors.
