Generally associated with English country house collections throughout the 18th Century and later, when their vibrant colors and exotic flavor made them the height of fashionable sophistication and most of these paintings were produced for the export market. Chinese artists were working in and around Guangzhou to service the Southern Chinese ports and the export market. However, since the point of its inception within China, the reverse painting was very much an imperial concern, with Chinese rulers themselves appreciating their exotic foreign characteristics.
