Seller's Notes: A Chinese export carved hardwood armchair with a carving program that covers every surface — crest rail, back splat, arm supports, arm terminals, seat apron, and cabriole legs — in a consistent vocabulary of dragons, foo dogs, clouds, lotus, and wave scrollwork. The crest rail carries a fully three-dimensional dragon in high relief emerging from clouds and foliage. The arm terminals are carved foo dog heads fully executed in the round. The seat apron runs a continuous carved dragon and cloud program around its full perimeter. Cabriole legs carved at the knees terminate in ball feet on brass casters. The combination of Western structural form and Chinese imperial decorative vocabulary is the defining characteristic of Chinese export furniture produced for the European and American market during the late Qing period. The hardwood throughout is richly patinated in a deep reddish-brown tone consistent with Chinese rosewood or a related dark export-trade hardwood. No maker identified.
