19th Century Biedermeier Antique Walnut Wardrobe/Armoire
Product details
Seller's Notes:Stunning antique Biedermeier wardrobe with key and rod for hanging clothes from the 1800s. Superior quality with gorgeous symmetrical book-matched walnut veneers. Biedermeier furniture represents the first modern European decorative style not dictated by the tastes of the aristocracy. Following the Napoleonic wars, a growing, wealthy urban middle class in the German-speaking states of Central Europe began to demand rights and privileges once granted only to nobles. Cabinetmakers in cities such as Vienna, Berlin and Mainz began to offer goods that reflected the tastes and needs of the new class. The makers of Biedermeier furniture used little or no gilding, silver hardware or other lavish ornament. Emphasis in furniture design was kept upon clean lines and minimal ornamentation consistent with Biedermeier's basis in utilitarian principles. The strongest aesthetic statement came from the wood — richly-grained, honey-colored veneers of walnut and fruitwood. Good antique condition with gentle signs of age and wear commensurate with age and use. Chipping of surface wood on bottom right side of wardrobe and several old scraps of paper stuck to the inside right door and inside right cabinet wall (see fourth picture). Two small chips on front and light cracking and scratches. Slits on back of armoire so not a perfect fit of wood to back of armoire (visible in open door pic and backside pic). Still looks amazing considering the age. Such a high quality piece, and reflective of old world craftmanship. Clean interior with no odors.
