1879 John Charlton Chromolithograph "The Rivals"
Product details
Seller's Notes:This lively scene appears to be from an original 1879 copy of a supplement to The Graphic, a British illustrated weekly newspaper. It appears to be a chromolithograph (a color print produced by a method that had become popular by the late nineteenth century). John Charlton (1849-1917) was a painter and illustrator known for war scenes; but he also produced a series of vivid sketches that he called "Sketches in the Hunting Field." This print foregrounds two ladies riding sidesaddle and exhibiting excellent form (note the free movement of the horses' heads allowed by the slack in the reins). The print has a fold down the middle (bearing out that this is indeed one of the actual copies of the original 1879 supplements to The Graphic). The frame is time-worn and has scrapes, marks, and gaps at the corners (see photos). The print is backed by cardboard held in by old tape (see photos).
