Seller's Notes:African Hand-Carved Wooden Bench (“Pygmy Bench”) Object: Hand-carved African wooden bench, commonly referred to in the antique trade as a “Pygmy Bench.” Date: Unknown. The exact age cannot be determined. It may date to the late 19th or early 20th century, although this has not been confirmed. Material and Decoration: Solid hardwood, hand carved with incised geometric and triangular chip-carved motifs. Etched decoration appears along the wooden rails and on the raised headrest. The piece is constructed with turned wooden rails, pegged joinery, and retains a rich natural patina developed through age and genuine use. Function: Traditionally used as a low household bench for sitting, resting, or reclining. Similar forms have also been described as portable benches that could be used to assist in carrying an injured or sick person by means of the projecting handles, although the intended purpose of this particular example cannot be confirmed. Provenance: Acquired in 2008 from a curio shop in the remote town of Graskop, Mpumalanga (formerly the Eastern Transvaal), South Africa, and subsequently shipped to Los Angeles, California. The shop specialized in authentic handmade African art obtained from traders representing many regions of the African continent. The original country of origin and cultural attribution remain unconfirmed. Based on its overall form, construction, and craftsmanship, the bench is believed to be of Central African tradition, although attribution to a specific ethnic group or region would require examination by a specialist in African ethnographic art. Condition: Sturdy and well preserved, displaying a beautiful aged patina and authentic signs of long-term use that enhance both its character and historical appeal. Collector’s Notes: This impressive piece serves equally well as an ethnographic work of art, a decorative low bench, or a distinctive coffee table. Its sculptural form, traditional craftsmanship, and evident age make it an exceptional addition to both modern and eclectic interiors and an attractive piece for collectors of African tribal and ethnographic art.
