Earth Day, for many of us, has been around the entire\u00adty of our lives. From receiv\u00ading saplings in grade school to learn\u00ading about impor\u00adtant envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal caus\u00ades as we got old\u00ader, our day of cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adtion for Moth\u00ader Nature has been ever-present. What you may not know is that the his\u00adto\u00adry of Earth Day isn\u2019t as long and sto\u00adried as you might imag\u00adine. Found\u00aded only in 1970, it took more than a decade to go glob\u00adal, and even longer to become the force of nature (pun intend\u00aded) that it is today. Though short in time, the his\u00adto\u00adry of Earth Day is com\u00adpelling, a bit sur\u00adpris\u00ading and a great reminder to keep the work up for future Earth Weeks. That\u2019s right, we said Earth Week (the pop\u00adu\u00adlar, yet unof\u00adfi\u00adcial exten\u00adsion of Earth Day into a full week). <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

How it started: Earth Day in the 1970\u2019s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Earth Day was found\u00aded in 1970 by Sen\u00ada\u00adtor Gay\u00adlord Nel\u00adson as a day of envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal education\u2014not too long ago! In the 1960\u2019s, Amer\u00adi\u00adcans start\u00aded becom\u00ading more aware of the envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal effects that our actions had on the plan\u00adet. Pri\u00ador to that, there was lit\u00adtle knowl\u00adedge of the dam\u00adage we were doing, and no laws or agen\u00adcies in place to pro\u00adtect the envi\u00adron\u00adment. In fact, the smell of pol\u00adlu\u00adtion was often tout\u00aded as the \u201csmell of pros\u00adper\u00adi\u00adty.\u201d<\/a> Fac\u00adto\u00adries could emit tox\u00adic waste and smoke with no reper\u00adcus\u00adsions. A far cry from today\u2019s stan\u00addards. (And here\u2019s hop\u00ading that today\u2019s stan\u00addards are a far cry from tomorrow\u2019s). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nel\u00adson was inspired by the anti-Viet\u00adnam War protests and teach-ins, and envi\u00adsioned sim\u00adi\u00adlar action being tak\u00aden around pro\u00adtect\u00ading the envi\u00adron\u00adment. He imag\u00adined a grass\u00adroots move\u00adment start\u00aded at the col\u00adlege lev\u00adel, hop\u00ading the noise would become loud enough to bring the issue to a nation\u00adal lev\u00adel. And *spoil\u00ader alert* it worked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first Earth Day was planned by an activist at Stan\u00adford Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty. The date cho\u00adsen, April 22nd, was part of a strate\u00adgic effort to max\u00adi\u00admize the num\u00adber of stu\u00addents on col\u00adlege cam\u00adpus\u00ades. Over 20 mil\u00adlion Amer\u00adi\u00adcans par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpat\u00aded in the first Earth Day, about 10% of the U.S. pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion at the time. Ral\u00adlies popped up in major cities includ\u00ading Philadel\u00adphia, Los Ange\u00adles, New York and Wash\u00ading\u00adton DC, and polit\u00adi\u00adcal par\u00adties came togeth\u00ader in mutu\u00adal agreement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Fol\u00adlow\u00ading the suc\u00adcess of Earth Day, Amer\u00adi\u00adcans start\u00aded chang\u00ading their beliefs on envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal activism, and pret\u00adty imme\u00addi\u00adate changes were made to leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtion. (To under\u00adstand the seis\u00admic nature of these imme\u00addi\u00adate changes, think about how dif\u00adfi\u00adcult it is to pass any<\/em> leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtion in today\u2019s world.) Famil\u00adiar leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtion that passed that same year includ\u00aded the Clean Air Act, Water Qual\u00adi\u00adty Improve\u00adment Act, Endan\u00adgered Species Act, Tox\u00adic Sub\u00adstances Con\u00adtrol Act, and the Sur\u00adface Min\u00ading Con\u00adtrol and Recla\u00adma\u00adtion Act. By Decem\u00adber 1970, the Envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal Pro\u00adtec\u00adtion Agency (EPA) was estab\u00adlished \u201cto pro\u00adtect human health and guard the nat\u00adur\u00adal envi\u00adron\u00adment.\u201d And by 1971, over 25% of Amer\u00adi\u00adcans believed that pro\u00adtect\u00ading the envi\u00adron\u00adment was a goal that should be a top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

How it\u2019s going: Earth Day today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Earth Day has been rec\u00adog\u00adnized every year since 1970, and has only con\u00adtin\u00adued to grow in strength and num\u00adbers. By 1990, the move\u00adment went glob\u00adal in over 141 coun\u00adtries. Today, it rep\u00adre\u00adsents the largest civic event in the world, observed by over a bil\u00adlion peo\u00adple annu\u00adal\u00adly and cel\u00ade\u00adbrat\u00aded by over 174 countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Earth Day edu\u00adca\u00adtion and coor\u00addi\u00adna\u00adtion is helmed by the Earth Day Net\u00adwork<\/a>, a non\u00adprof\u00adit orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtion whose mis\u00adsion is to \u201cdiver\u00adsi\u00adfy, edu\u00adcate and acti\u00advate the envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal move\u00adment world\u00adwide.\u201d They are the largest recruiter to the envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal move\u00adment in the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through\u00adout grade school, Earth Day was often met with fan\u00adfare and activ\u00adi\u00adties. In adult\u00adhood, it\u2019s like\u00adly that you\u2019ve gone a few Earth Days with\u00adout hear\u00ading about or get\u00adting involved in the cause. But a move\u00adment isn\u2019t a move\u00adment with\u00adout peo\u00adple, and Earth Day is one move\u00adment (among many) worth fight\u00ading for. As we head into Earth Week we encour\u00adage every\u00adone to take a moment out of their day or week to do some\u00adthing to bet\u00adter our plan\u00adet! It can be as lit\u00adtle as edu\u00adcat\u00ading your\u00adself on envi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal caus\u00ades<\/a>, to mak\u00ading small lifestyle changes<\/a>, to vol\u00adun\u00adteer\u00ading for a neigh\u00adbor\u00adhood cleanup.
