Bounded from east to west from the East River to 5th Ave, and from north to south from 96th St to 59th St, the Upper East Side is one of the most relaxed, luxurious neighborhoods within New York City.
The Upper East Side is available via the 4, 5 and 6 trains, which run below Lexington Avenue. The N, Q and R trains also stop at 59th Street, connecting the Upper East Side to downtown and Brooklyn.
The glittering, moneyed Upper East Side projected in popular media exists west of Lexington Avenue between 63rd and 94th Streets. This section of the Upper East Side drips luxury from the storefront windows of its Madison Avenue boutiques. Many of the people, the mansions, the quiet streets, and countless galleries all conform to an extravagant and uniquely charming “Old New York” aesthetic. These are not the chic streets of SoHo. But then again, they don’t want to be.
Restaurants and Bars
You can’t fully experience the Upper East without testing some of its famed eateries. Dylan’s Candy Bar is the creation of Dylan Lauren, daughter of Ralph Lauren. For those with a sweet tooth, this is Mecca. For dinner, there is Café Boulud by eponymous owner and internationally famous chef Daniel Boulud. Café Boulud serves high-end French fare in a chic setting. If you’re more of a pub type, check out Biddy’s on East 91st Street. You won’t be disappointed.
Cost of Living
Living in the Upper East Side does not have to cost you an arm and a leg. The entry-level rental price for a one-bedroom in a walk-up is about $2,000/mo, while a one-bedroom in a true luxury building starts around $3,200/mo.
Decorating Your Apartment
This neighborhood is all about classic luxury. With that in mind, we recommend keeping your walls light and adding a few sleek statement pieces to elevate the aesthetics of your place. Take your pick and play around with vintage or mid-century elements, like an accent chair, to recreate the feel of a classic NYC apartment.
